Unlocking the Power of Your IP Assets

SAN DIEGO CHAPTER EVENT

Unlocking the Power of Your IP Assets

This presentation will not only help the audience to identify these critical but unseen resources in their or their clients’ businesses, but will explore how these IP assets can be successfully leveraged to improve overall business performance, exit valuation, secure short-term funding, attract equity investment, create additional revenue streams from licensing, and support expansion in new territories. It’s all about the untapped value in their business that is lurking beneath the surface!

IP exists in all businesses, but its value is almost never included in the company’s accounts. The lack of visibility often results in this vital asset being underutilized by Management. This session will shine a spotlight on this critical business resource and demonstrate how to identify it and ensure the business is maximizing its return on investment from IP.

The audience will gain invaluable insight from the experiences of other companies – through the review of our client case studies – seeing first-hand how other businesses have utilized IP both to secure and protect revenue streams and in a variety of corporate transactions.

Learning Objectives:

  • How to identify ALL the IP you control and how to maximize the return you get from them
  • How to identify key IP assets that underpin revenues and secure competitive advantage
  • How to maximize the value of your IP assets
  • How to leverage your IP assets in trading eg licensing and joint ventures, to secure new revenue streams, and access new territories and markets
  • How you can use your IP assets as collateral for funding and to attract investment

About the Presenter

Stephen Robertson

Stephen Robertson

Founder, Metis Partners

Meet Stephen Robertson.

I am acknowledged as one of the “World’s 300 Leading IP Strategists” by IAM magazine and have 25 years’ experience in corporate finance. I provide IP valuation and monetisation advice to a range of businesses, including corporates and their banks, private equity and VCs investors on IP-backed corporate restructuring and lending across Europe, the US and Asia.

Metis Partners: I founded Metis Partners in 2003 and since then we have grown to become a young dynamic team of IP specialists, working from offices in Glasgow and San Diego. Metis Partners is an IP Valuation firm with a proven track record in the assessment, valuation and sale of IP assets for a range of clients, big and small, private and PLC, across numerous sectors.  Our approach is focused on analysing a business, its key resources, its competitive advantage and how IP contributes to the business. We get a unique, inside view of what makes companies tick – both the successful ones and those who are failing.

My focus is innovation: To encourage IP-centric deal-making, investment and finance, I launched IP100, an ecosystem for IP-rich companies, enabling businesses to gain recognition for the investment they have made in IP.  Many of the 150 companies who joined the IP100 have successfully leveraged their IP to raise new capital and secure funding. We publish our IP League Table, in association with BQ magazine, which is an annual ranking of companies based on a rating of their IP asset strength and track record in exploiting IP, across five IP categories: brands, software, patents, trade secrets and critical databases.

Industry- related credentials: I am the former chair of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) Scotland and former member of the LES Council, Britain and Ireland. I have contributed to European initiatives focused on national policy change – specifically IP-related finance and IP recognition among SMEs.

I co-authored a book on IP strategy and valuation and co-edited another on IP strategy, intended to be an industry reference point. I speak on IP monetisation and valuation at global events, including World Intellectual Property Organisation, IPBC and BIP Asia events.

Professional qualifications – A member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland since 1993.
