Helping Owners Overcome the Psychological Barriers of Ownership Transitions: Moving from Procrastination to Action

WISCONSIN CHAPTER EVENT

Helping Owners Overcome the Psychological Barriers of Ownership Transitions: Moving from
Procrastination to Action

This presentation will explore some of the most common psychological barriers or emotional constraints business owners (family or non-family owned and operated business owners) face as they transition out of an active position of leadership and ownership.

These barriers are distractions. They trigger procrastination, confusion or mixed messaging, and an overall lack of clear, consistent direction. These distractions greatly affect the ownership transition and management succession planning process.

We will look at how these psychological barriers can manifest before, during, and after the transition process starts and the potential negative implications.

Strategies to help owners overcome these barriers will be provided, with an emphasis on working in a holistic, purpose-driven, proactive, and collaborative manner between business owners and a multi-disciplinary team of advisors.

Learning Objectives:

  • Application of strategies to help owners overcome barriers to ownership transitions.
  • List strategies that overcome psychological barriers.
  • Describe how psychological factors affect decision making as it relates to succession planning.
